Kang-wook, a law student at Seoul National University, faces economic hardship after losing contact with his family in North Korea. To make ends meet, he sells his blood at a hospital where he meets nurse Jin-young, and they become close. As Kang-wook's life becomes increasingly difficult, Ki-yong, a son of supervisor of a tenant farm, appears and deceives Kang-wook into getting involved in left-wing activities. Ki-yong's true identity is exposed by Yoon-ae, a person from hometown, leading to Ki-yong's arrest. Meanwhile, Kang-wook and Jin-young marry with the blessings of Professor Park and friends, while Kang-wook's friend Do-hyeon struggles to hide his feelings for Jin-young. The newlyweds' sweet dream comes to an end due to the Korean War, and they become separated. Jin-young, tired of waiting for Kang-wook, takes refuge with Do-hyeon. Kang-wook, hiding at Yoon-ae's house, is eventually arrested by Ki-yong and leftists who were released from prison.
